  3. Your name is used in various forms throughout NOS.
  4.  
  5. For instance, if you POP mail from a hub station,
  6. (meaning: if you use Post Office Protocol), your
  7. station will login automatically by sending the
  8. station callsign and your first name.
  9.  
  10. When you send mail, your full name will be inserted
  11. into the information header (some vital information
  12. sent with the message) and your first name
  13. (see <F2>) appears in the mail signature (a piece
  14. of text that says who and where you are) that is
  15. appended to your messages.

  17. Automatic login for an ftp session (File Transfer
  18. Protocol) to other stations uses your callsign
  19. and first name.
  20.  
  21. TCP/IP tends to be more open about personal details
  22. that other modes because it is more user than BBS
  23. orientated.  If you object to this for any reason,
  24. just enter your first name in field 1 (see <F1>).

  26. Since your firstname is used in the mail signature
  27. and is normally less formal, you may like to
  28. abbreviate it or change it to your nick name.
  29.  
  30. That is why a separate field is provided for your mail
  31. name.
